BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Nate Higgins earned a first-period pin Saturday to highlight SIUE's performance at Indiana.
The Hoosiers won their first dual meet of the season, eclipsing the Cougars 25-12.
"We were probably underdogs, but we felt like there was a lot of winnable matches," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "We competed really hard in a lot of matches. We just need to find ways to come out on top. Late in a match you have to believe in yourself and go for the win. Some of the guys didn't have it today."
Higgins, a redshirt freshman from Millstadt, Illinois, pinned Bryce Martin in 2 minutes, 57 seconds at 165 pounds.
"It was a nice win for Nate," said Spates. "That was a tough kid. Nate got taken down, but came back and got two takedowns and then put his opponent in a cradle."
SIUE, 0-4, also picked up victories from Dakota Leach with a 4-2 sudden victory win over Alonzo Shepherd at 133 pounds and Jake Tindle with a 1-0 win over Jake Madengale at 197 pounds.
"Dakota did a good job and got an early takedown," said Spates. "Dakota got his offense going right away and did it again once the match went into overtime."
Tindle needed a single escape for the victory.
"It was not his best match, but he came away with the win," noted Spates. "He has been banged up so to go out a win is good."
SIUE returns home for a dual match next Sunday when the Wildcats of Northwestern visit the Vadalabene Center for a 7 p.m. contest.
