Tindle Advances at NCAA Championships

Current Bracket as of 10 a.m. Friday

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – SIUE's Jake Tindle will be back to wrestle one more day at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

More than 18,000 fans at the Scottrade Center were on hand for the national championships. Both Tindle and Connor McMahon competed for the Cougars.

Tindle, a 197-pounder from Troy, Illinois, upset 11th-seeded Alex Polizzi, of Northwestern, in the opening round of the Championships but fell into the consolation bracket Thursday evening after a 12-2 loss to Iowa's Nathan Burak.

"Jake came out with a huge first-round win for us," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "That was huge for the program, getting our first win at the national tournament and our first win over a seeded wrestler."

Tindle's first match Friday morning when competition continues at 10 is against Wisconsin's Timothy McCall, the No. 12 seed.

McMahon drew defending national champion and undefeated Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State in the opening round. Dieringer advanced to the second round with a pin in 4 minutes, 33 seconds. McMahon was eliminated from the tournament in the consolation round by Ohio's Harrison Hightower in a 3:22 pin.

"He had a tough draw coming in. He came out to wrestle, but it just wasn't his day," said Spates.
