BROOKINGS, S.D. – Derek Nagel won both of his matches Friday in a pair of dual meets Friday against CSU Bakersfield and South Dakota State.

SIUE dropped to 2-10 for the season with a 33-6 loss to CSU Bakersfield and a 34-12 defeat to host South Dakota State.

Nagel was SIUE's only two-time winner of the day. He pinned CSU Bakersfield;s Dylan Bollinger in 2 minutes, 5 seconds. The 184-pounder followed that with a 10-5 decision over SDSU's Brady Ayers.

"He did a good job of getting the pin in the first match," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "In his second match, he was in a battle and did a good job of oicking up the win with back points in the third period."

Despite the final score, the match with CSU Bakersfield was much closer. The Cougars lost all five matches that were decided by three points or less.

"It was a frustrating match," said Spates.

Much of the problem, Spates noted, was that his team was not finishing while in a scrambling position.

The Cougars won two more matches in the South Dakota State match. Nate Higgins was in control of the match at 165 pounds when Luke Zilverberg bowed out with an injury at 5:24. Chris Johnson also picked up a crucial takedown in the third period of his 3-2 victory at heavyweight over SDSU's Alex Macki.

SIUE returns to the Vadalabene Center Sunday with matches scheduled against Davidson and Grand Canyon.
