EVANSTON, Ill. – Karsten Van Velsor turned in SIUE's biggest win of the night, but the Cougar wrestling team dropped Saturday's dual meet at Northwestern 33-10.

Van Velsor recorded his first major decision of the season with an 11-3 victory over Anthony Petrone at 157 pounds. Clayton Bass collected a 7-2 win over Ben Sullivan at 165 pounds. Jake McKiernan won his third straight match with a second straight shutout over a Big Ten opponent, dispatching Conan Jennings 4-0 at heavyweight.

"That's another great win for Jake," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "It was a good one for Karsten as well picking up bonus points. Clayton has been wrestling 174 throughout the year and then we had an injury at 165, and we needed him to cut some weight. He came up with a big win for the team."

SIUE, 0-4, had three straight matches come down to the final seconds at one point in the dual meet, and Northwestern captured wins in each case.

Northwestern's Jason Ipsarides edged John Muldoon at 133 9-7 in overtime. Alexander McKenna followed up at 141 by edging SIUE's Trevor Feagans 6-4 in overtime. John Fahy, who hadn't wrestled since the opening weekend, dropped a tough 11-9 decision to Shayne Oster at 149 pounds.

"We had a lot of swing matches that we lost," said Spates. "We had a tough week. We put the guys through some tough dual meets and competition, but you have to wrestle the full seven minutes regardless of the circumstances and sometimes eight or nine in overtime.

"We wrestled well enough in a couple of matches, but you have to find ways to win," added Spates.

SIUE is looking for big crowds next Sunday when it begins Southern Conference action against Appalachian State. On Dec. 19, the Cougars welcome Purdue for a dual meet at home.
