EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Sunday is Alumni Day for SIUE Wrestling. SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates expects a good crowd of former wrestlers and coaches to be in attendance for the 1 p.m. match against VMI at the Vadalabene Center.
"We have 20 to 30 people coming back," said Spates. "At halftime of the event Sunday, we'll be recognizing that group."
Spates said the Southern Conference matchup between VMI and SIUE figures to be a good one. VMI edged the Cougars 21-18 last season.
"We didn't wrestle our best last season so we're looking to come out and compete this season," noted Spates.
A number of wrestlers are competing at the Greyhound Open today to sharpen their skills in case they are needed the rest of the season.
"We have some guys at a couple of weight classes who are pretty competitive and lost close in wrestle-offs. We want to make sure they get matches down the stretch," said Spates.
One of those wrestlers at the Greyhound Open is Connor McMahon, who is battling back from an injury. McMahon was an NCAA qualifier last season for the Cougars.
"Connor is actually at the Greyhound Open today and will come back for the VMI match Sunday. We're going to try to get him more matches," said Spates.
