Cougars, Jaguars Play to Scoreless Draw

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer bombarded the IUPUI goal with a season-high 23 shots Wednesday, but the Cougars settled for a scoreless draw with the Jaguars at Korte Stadium.

The Cougars moved to 6-7-1. The Jaguars are 0-11-1.

"The positives we take is we get a shutout," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "We kept them from really any chances. We created ample opportunities."

Jorge Gonzalez and Victor Aguiar led the SIUE charge. Both players finished with five shots. Each had a shot on goal. Gonzalez put a header just over the top in the first half. In the 87th minute he hit the post with a curling shot.

"Obviously in a game like this you need someone to step up and we just couldn't find the back of the net," Sanchez said.

The SIUE defense limited IUPUI to just three shots. The Jaguars did not have a shot in the first half, managed just two shots in the second half and one during the first overtime period.

"We didn't make any silly mistakes and we stayed disciplined," Sanchez added. "You don't want to beat yourself. We didn't panic and stayed very composed throughout the game and anytime you get a shutout it's a good thing."

SIUE goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo made three saves to earn the shutout, his sixth of the season. He now has 26 career shutouts, which is the all-time mark at SIUE.

IUPUI goalkeeper Michael Buck made six saves to earn his first shutout.

The Cougars continue Mid-American Conference play Saturday with a 7 p.m. game at Northern Illinois.
