COLUMBIA, Mo. – SIUE's John Muldoon recorded his second fall of the season but the Cougars dropped the dual match to No. 7 Missouri 34-12.
"We wrestled well tonight," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "A big part is that we went out and competed. A lot of times when we have wrestled these ranked teams we'll be beat before we step on the mat. That's a change I have seen. We're going to compete hard no matter who we wrestle."
Muldoon, a redshirt sophomore from Pearl River, New York, pinned Nicholas Chase Brennan in 5 minutes, 56 seconds at 133 pounds.
"John wrestled well and came away with a big fall," said Spates.
Freddie Rodriguez, the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week, continued to roll with a 12-6 overtime victory over Barlow McGhee. It was the second straight ranked opponent that Rodriguez has defeated. Rodriguez and McGhee are ranked as high as No. 25 in different national polls.
"Freddie comes out over a kid who dominated him last year at NCAAs," said Spates. "That was a big win for him."
Jake Residori added to SIUE's effort with a 5-2 win over No. 19-ranked Dylan Wisman at 174 pounds.
The match, played out in front of wrestlers who will compete in the Missouri state championships, was the final regular season event for SIUE. Next up is the SoCon Championships in Charleston, S.C., March 4.
