Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – SIUE men's soccer unloaded 10 shots on goal Saturday, but dropped a 2-1 decision on the road at Lipscomb.
"We put some good attacking moments together, but we didn't finish them off," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said.
SIUE fell to 0-3 while Lipscomb improved to 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Bisons took the lead in the 53rd minute on Ivan Sakou's first goal of the year. Sakou settled a cross from Logan Paynter and scored from 10 yards out to give Lipscomb the 1-0 lead.
SIUE sophomore Jorge Gonzalez netted his first goal as a Cougar to tie the score in the 82nd minute. Gonzalez was able to get a head on a cross from Eric Tejada.
The guys worked hard to come back and got a goal which they deserved," Sanchez said.
Paynter sealed the win for Lipscomb just four minutes later. He scored on a header of his own after a cross from Joe Kerridge in the 86th minute.
"We continue to struggle to finish games out," Sanchez added. "We're showing glimpses of the team we know we can be, but we have to learn to put together 90 minutes."
It is the second time in as many games the Cougars have gone down to a late goal.
"Sometimes you have to learn the hard way," Sanchez said. "We're definitely learning the hard way."
In total, the Cougars outshot the Bisons 16-12. The 10 shots on goal are a season high for the Cougars and tied last year's season high.
Lipscomb goalkeeper Christopher Zappia turned away nine shots, while SIUE goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo was credited with one save.
It's a quick turnaround for SIUE, which welcomes Memphis to Edwardsville for a Labor Day game. The Tigers and Cougars will kick off at 7 p.m. Monday at Korte Stadium.
