Cougars Ground Falcons to Move to 2-0 in Conference Play

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE ran its unbeaten streak to seven and improved to 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play with a 2-0 win over Bowling Green Saturday at Korte Stadium.

The Cougars improved to 8-3-1 overall. Bowling Green slipped to 7-5-1 and 0-2 in MAC play.

"We still have a tough road ahead," SIUE Head Coach Cale Wassermann said. "We feel good about a win at home in shutout fashion against a good Bowling Green team that pushed us and made us work tonight."

SIUE capitalized on a single chance in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Jorge Gonzalez carried down the right side of the field, before crossing into the penalty area. Kelby Phillips hit a low right-footed shot inside the post to put SIUE on top in the 27th minute.

The Falcons outshot the Cougars 6-3 in the first half and the Cougars had just two shots on goal in the period.

"Bowling Green may have been a little better than us in the first half," Wassermann said. "We moved some players around and there was a little adjustment period. We had a great response in the second half."

The Cougars played with much more urgency in the second half and picked up the second goal in the 73rd minute off a corner kick. Jorgen Pettersen lifted the kick into the box where it was head by Jake Meier to the top of the box. Andres Delascio was waiting and buried a ball from 21 yards away to make it 2-0.

"Guys like Kelby Phillips and Andres Delascio come to mind when you talk about our depth and our versatility," Wassermann added. "The ability for us to interchange systems allows us to counter-balance teams. We are multidimensional."

Noah Heim made five saves and picked up the eighth shutout of his SIUE career in the win.

SIUE travels to Akron to continue MAC play Friday night.
