Cougars Shutout Bears, 2-0

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.— The SIUE men's soccer shutout the Bears of Central Arkansas on Saturday, 2-0. The Cougars came away with another victory of their own, improving their win streak on homecoming weekend to 12-0.

"That is something we did not talk about a lot this week," commented Head Men's Soccer Coach Cale Wasserman. "We knew that the record was there, but knew we wanted to treat it like a normal game. We are, however, extremely happy to be able to keep that record going," Wasserman added.

Both teams went into halftime with a scoreless draw. The Bears had the advantage over the Cougars, outscoring them five to two in the first half.

The first goal of the game and the first Cougar goal came at minute 50 from Jorge Gonzalez with an assist from Corban McAvinew. The team was not done yet, as Kelby Phillips also found the back of the net at minute 65 with Steven Bibas with the assist.

"This was our fifth game in 15 days, and I credit a lot of our success to being able to rotate players around," Wasserman commented. "We have depth and are able to bring in guys off the bench and receive quality minutes from them."

Despite outshooting the Cougars 18-6, the Bears were unable to find the back of the net.

In goal for the Cougars, Lluis Martorell notched a career high of 12 saves on the night. He now improves his record to 2-0 on the season.

"Coming into the second half, we felt the pressure of the homecoming crowd," Wasserman continued. "Once we were able to get that first goal, we felt the energy of everyone around us to keep pushing through."

The Cougars improve their record to 4-3-1 and will play two more home games before opening up conference play. The team will host Western Illinois on Tuesday with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
