Ingles, Cougars Blank South Dakota

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TUCSON, Ariz. – Emily Ingles tossed a collegiate shutout in her home state Saturday as SIUE softball defeated South Dakota 3-0.

The Cougars, now 12-5, also were bested by No. 4-ranked and tournament host Arizona 15-2 in five innings earlier Saturday.

Ingles, a senior right-hander from Scottsdale, Arizona, scattered seven hits for her seventh win of the season. She already has surpassed her win total (6) from a year ago.

"Emily did a phenomenal job," said SIUE Head Coach Jessica Jones.

Ingles said she prepared her mind and got herself settled after getting pulled and taking the loss against Arizona earlier in the day.

"I told myself I have to be ready to go back in," she said.

SIUE's offense got started quickly against South Dakota's Holly Fletcher. South Dakota dropped to 11-14 overall.

Alana Cobb-Adams doubled to start the game, and Bailley Concatto added a first-pitch infield single. After Concatto stole second, Zoe Schafer drove Cobb-Adams home with a sacrifice fly to center field. Kloe Hilbrenner later added another sacrifice fly to put the Cougars up 2-0 after one inning.

After getting the early lead, Ingles didn't let the pressure of playing in front of her high school coach and numerous family members get to her.

"I calmed down and was attacking batters," Ingles said. "As a team, we really stuck together through the adversity."

"She is a trooper and is pitching like a real senior," added Jones.

The Cougars wouldn't add another run to the scoreboard until the sixth when Hilbrenner doubled and scored on a Sydney Bina single and a South Dakota infield error.

Earlier in the day, No. 4 Arizona collected 10 hits and used rallies of four runs in the first, four runs in the third and seven in the fourth to defeat SIUE. The Cougars, however, had eight hits against one of the nation's top teams. Cobb-Adams, Schafer and Hilbrenner each had two hits for the Cougars.

"I really felt like we were hitting the ball like they were, and that's great to see," said Jones.

SIUE closes out the Wildcat Invitational Sunday with a 10 a.m. CT contest against Boise State.
