CLARION, Penn. – SIUE wrestlers Justin Ruffin and Colton McKiernan each won twice Saturday, but the Cougars dropped a pair of tight dual matches.
The Cougars fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Mid-American Conference after being defeated by Kent State 25-15 and host Clarion 21-15.
"We're competing overall," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "The guys are wrestling hard, and they are coming in with good attitudes. We're finding ways to win in some matches, and we're finding ways to lose in other matches."
Spates said he told his team not to worry about team scores right now.
"Get better by yourself," he told his team. "If we can get better individually then the team success will come."
Ruffin, ranked 20th nationally at 157 pounds, and McKiernan both improved to 5-1 with their wins.
"They both did a good job. Justin was scoring back points and Colton was wrestling tough on top so that was the big difference in their matches," said Spates.
SIUE now returns home for the SIUE quad next Saturday as the Cougars take on Buffalo at 11 a.m. and then a second match this season with Clarion at 1 p.m. and Northern Illinois at 3 p.m.
