EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE wrestling earned its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season, besting Clarion 18-12. The Cougars were edged by Buffalo 19-15 and Northern Illinois 27-10.

The Cougars also took time to honor senior Tommy Helton, competing in his final home events.

SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates was pleased with his team's effort at First Community Arena.

"I was really happy with the way we competed," he said.

SIUE dominated Clarion with seven match victories, including a 37-second pin by Justin Ruffin over Taylor Ortz. Saul Ervin added bonus points with a 141-pound win over Kyle Schicklel 13-5. SIUE's Sergio Villalobos blanked Brett Wittmann at 197 pounds, and Aric Bohn overpowered Jackson Talbott 14-4.

Both Ruffin and Ervin won all of their matches Saturday.

Spates noted the improvement he has seen from Ervin.

"He's being patient with picking his spots rather than let fly for seven minutes," said Spates.

SIUE has one more dual meet left in the MAC season, a Feb. 7 contest at Missouri. The MAC Championships are set for Feb. 26-27.
