TRENTON, N.J. - Five SIUE wrestlers advanced through day one of the 2021 Mid-American Conference Championships and will compete for a spot in next month's NCAA Tournament.
"I excited about our guys who are wrestling," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "Most of the time we are winning is when we were attacking and on the offensive."
Saul Ervin won his first two matches but dropped his 141-pound quarterfinal match at Central Michigan's Dreden Simon 8-4.
Aaron Schulist (133), Cardeionte Wilson (149), Ryan Yarnell (184) and Colton McKiernan (285) also will work their way through the consolation bracket.
"It was also frustrating because we left a lot of close matches out there," If we find a way to win those matches, we would have a lot more guys wrestling on day two."
SIUE is in ninth place in the team scoring. The Cougars have 31 points, the same number of points accumulated last season in the whole 2020 Championships.
The rest of the tournament at Cure Arena is scheduled for Saturday.
