Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE tennis capped off the weekend with a 6-1 victory over NCAA Division II Illinois-Springfield on Sunday afternoon, improving to 3-0 on the season.
As has become the norm for the Cougars, SIUE started off the match by securing the doubles point, as Jill Lambrechts and Jordan Schifano cruised to a 6-1 win in the No. 1 doubles position; meanwhile, Callaghan Adams and Caitlyn Sporing dropped a close 6-4 decision in the No. 2 doubles position. UIS did not field a duo for the No. 3 doubles position.
In singles play, Jordan Schifano made her first appearance in the No. 1 singles position with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over UIS' Carol Quevedo.
"I knew my match was going to be hard going into it," said Schifano. "When I was playing her [Schifano's opponent], we had similar styles. But I just had to out-rally her, be aggressive, and take it one point at a time."
Fabiola Perez dropped her singles match, the lone point allowed by SIUE, but the Cougars secured the victory with singles wins from Nicole Gomez (7-5, 6-1) and Melissa Vizcardo (6-1, 6-4). UIS did not field players in the No. 5 or No. 6 singles positions.
"It was good to get a look at different people in different spots," said Head Coach Adam Albertsen following the match. "UIS is a really strong team and had tons of fight, so it was good to see us come out on back-to-back days and get used to playing matches on back-to-back days to get us back in conference mode."
The Cougars will now prepare for their second road trip of the season, as they head to Bloomington, Ill., for a Wednesday morning match against Illinois State.
