Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE tennis stormed out to an early lead in doubles play and never looked back, securing a commanding 6-1 win over UT Martin on Senior Day. Callaghan Adams also joined an elite group of Cougar tennis players who have won 50 or more singles matches over their collegiate career.
The Cougars started off strong, as SIUE notched wins on all three doubles courts. The duo of Jill Lambrechts and Vanessa Reinicke earned a decisive 6-1 set win on the No. 1 court, as did Callaghan Adams and Jordan Schifano on the No. 2 court. The No. 3 doubles pair, which featured Vanessa Reinicke and Caitlyn Sporing, went unfinished.
"Really good match for the team," said SIUE Head Coach Adam Albertsen following the match. "I'm so proud of Callaghan Adams on Senior Day. She's provided so much to this program - leadership ability, everything on and off the court. It was great to see her finish with a doubles win and a singles win, and most importantly keep the team alive for possible postseason play in the OVC Tournament. She's meant everything to this program and I couldn't be more happy for her to get a win and really have a great day."
The Cougars then moved into singles play and continued their dominant form, earning straight set victories on the No. 2, 3, 5, and 6 courts. This included Adams, who notched her 50th career singles victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 5 slot. Vanessa Reinicke won in a tight three-set fixture on the No. 1 court, as the match came down to a tiebreaker that went the way of Reinicke.
"As a team, we probably played our best doubles of the season," added Albertsen. "We took control of every match - played smart and played aggressive. It was really good to see us getting better and hitting our highest peak in doubles and securing that point."
The Cougars will await other matches around the Ohio Valley Conference, with the results of those determining their postseason fate. SIUE finishes the 2021 regular season at 10-7 overall and 3-4 in OVC play.
