THE COUGARS:Open Conference play against Missouri State Sunday. SIUE will play the first of 10 Missouri Valley Conference games.

BACK IN THE VALLEY: After playing four seasons in the Mid-American Conference, SIUE officially returns to the Missouri Valley Conference, where the Cougars played as affiliate members from 2010-2016. SIUE won a pair of tournament championships, one regular season championship and amassed a record of 25-13-7 in the MVC.

LAST TIME: SIUE fought back from a 1-0 deficit to earn a draw at No. 24 Saint Louis in the Bronze Boot game. Pau Palacin netted the equalizer in the 81st minute. 

SERIES STUFF: SIUE is facing Missouri State for the 18th time overall and the first time since defeating the Bears to win the MVC Championship in 2016 in Springfield, Mo. In fact, both of SIUE's MVC titles have come against Missouri State. They have met two other times in tournament play and 13 times in regular season play.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: SIUE freshman forward Alex Segura picked up MVC Offensive Player of the Week honors Sept. 6. Segura netted the first two goals of his college career, including the overtime game-winner against Air Force.

LEADERS: At 1.3 goals per game, SIUE is the third-highest scoring team in the Valley. The Cougars have taken the second most shots (62) and have generated the second most corners (26). Max Broughton's three goals rank third, while Kelby Phillips' three assists are second. Phillips ranks 26th in the NCAA in total assists. Broughton is 47th in total goals. 

NICE SAVE: Cougar goalkeepers Lluis Martorell and Tor Erik Larsen have split time in goal the last two seasons. They combined to average 5.50 saves per game during the 2020-21 season, which was fifth best in the NCAA. SIUE's team save percentage was .797, which ranked second in the MAC and No. 28 nationally.

OVERTIME: SIUE has already played three overtime games this year (1-0-2). They played two last year and seven such games in 2019. The school record for overtime games in a season is nine, in 2014 and 2016.
