SIUE Remains Undefeated, Matches Best Start since 2016-17 with Shutout Win at IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS  -  SIUE tennis remains undefeated through the opening three matches for the first time in six seasons, as the Cougars registered a 7-0 shutout win over the IUPUI Jaguars on Friday afternoon.

How It Happened

Doubles
  • The Cougars once again jumped on their opponents to start the match, started by Jordan Schifano and Vanessa Reinicke improving to 3-0 in doubles play with a 6-2 win in the No. 2 position.
  • The Red & White had already clinched the doubles point with a default win in the No. 3 position, but the duo of Maria Thibault and Jill Lambrechts ensured that all three doubles fixtures would go the way of SIUE with a 7-5 win in the No. 1 position.
Singles
  • Following a default win for Caitlyn Sporing in the No. 6 position, the Cougars began singles play with a 2-0 advantage on the match score.
  • Schifano demonstrated how dominant she can be in the No. 1 position, claiming the first set, 6-0, and leading 1-0 in the second set before her opponent was forced to retire due to injury. Schifano improves to 2-1 in singles match play this season.
  • With the match victory in sight, it did not take long for the Cougars to clinch their third-straight win of the season - Lambrechts dropped just one game in her No. 2 singles fixture, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win and improving to 7-2 in singles play over the fall and spring.
  • Vanessa Reinicke and Fabiola Perez both remain undefeated in singles play this spring, as Reinicke notched a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 3 spot before Perez claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 4 spot.
  • In between those two fixtures, Melissa Vizcardo earned a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 5 position to improve her to 2-1 in singles play this spring.

News & Notes
  • Friday's win marks the first shutout win for the Cougars since SIUE earned a 7-0 win over Eastern Illinois on March 23, 2021.
  • SIUE now leads the all-time series over IUPUI by a 7-2 margin. The Cougars now own three shutout victories over IUPUI (2022, 2017, 2009) and have dropped just one match to the Jaguars since moving to Division I.

Coach's Corner

"It was a good team win today. We have valued the doubles point this season and it was good to see victories at #1 and #2. I like how we started our singles matches and found a rhythm early."

"We can't wait to get back home and play in front of our fans against Western Illinois."
