EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE collected pins from
Sergio Villalobos and
Colton McKiernan Friday but dropped the overall dual match 21-19 to Mid-American Conference rival Rider at the Jon Davis Center.
"The guys wrestled really well," said SIUE Head Coach
Jeremy Spates. "Getting two pins is huge. It's something we've been talking a lot about as a team."
McKiernan improved his record to 2-0 at heavyweight with two pins, defeating Rider's David Szuba in 2 minutes, 28 seconds while keeping only his feet inbounds.
"I try to keep the same game plan every week, but I kept telling myself how hard I've worked," said McKiernan. "I have nothing to get nervous about, just go out there and scrap."
Villalobos pumped up the crowd with a second-period pin over Asa Terrell in 4:05 at 174 pounds.
SIUE won four matches overall with wins from
Caine Tyus (141) and
Cardi Wilson (165).
"Even with some of the matches we lost, we came to wrestle," added Spates.
The Cougars next action is next Saturday at the Lindenwood Open in St. Charles, Missouri.
