ST. CHARLES, MO. - SIUE wrestling placed 10 competitors among the top six in their respective weight classes Saturday at the Lindenwood Open.

No team scores were kept.

Caleb Tyus was SIUE's top finisher with second-place honors. He was only stopped by Oklahoma State's Teague Travis 3-1 in the championship match.

"Caleb did a really good job and wrestled hard throughout the day," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "He needed to get to more offense in the finals."

SIUE had success in both the Open/Gold Division as well as the Fresh/Soph/Black Division.

Alec Peralta placed third at 149 points in the Black Division. He earned a fall, a technical fall and a major decision along the way and finished off the day with a 9-5 win over Missouri's Easton Hilton.

Dan McKiernan (4th/285) and Bryson Buhk (6th/197) also were among the top six in the Black Division.

In the Open/Gold Division, Colton McKiernan won a 1-0 thriller in the third-place match at 285 pounds. Bradley Gillum, competing in his first collegiate tournament, took fourth place at 165 pounds. SIUE also had top six finishes from Davian Guanajuato (5th/125), Marcel Lopez (5th/133), Saul Ervin (5th/149) and Chase Diehl (6th/174).

"Colton did a good job," said Spates. "He beat that kid (Ryan Boersma of Missouri) twice in the tournament. It's always tough to beat a good wrestler twice in a row."

Spates said that despite the top-level finishes some improvements are needed.

"We didn't wrestle very smart," said Spates. We had a lot of little mistakes and doing things over and over that were costing us in those close matches."

Next up for the Cougars in their home tournament. The event is set for Dec. 4 at First Community Arena.
