SIUE Builds Momentum in Home Opener

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE wrestling won the final three matches of the opening dual meet of the season but lost the dual meet overall 26-15 to visiting Indiana.

A sizeable crowd at First Community Arena watched as Sergio Villalobos, Ryan Yarnell and Colton McKiernan closed out Friday's home opener with victories. Cardi Wilson provided the biggest pickup with a 4-2 win at 165 pounds.

McKiernan closed out the match with a 2 minute, 56 second pin over Jacob Bullock.

"Colton did a great job," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "He's been getting a lot better and has adapted his style. To get a pin to end it and send everybody cheering was great."

Wilson's victory reset the tone of the dual meet. After Indiana jumped out to a 20-0 lead after five matches, Wilson bested Robert Major to open the season with a win.

"I'm very confident in my defense," noted Wilson.

"Cardi came out and did a great job. He's been banged up. He was wrestling for the team and he just attacked and did a great job," said Spates.

Villalobos and Yarnell each won without giving up a point to their competitors. Villalobos defeated Drayton Harris 4-0 just before Yarnell downed Gabe Sollars 6-0.

Next up is the Maryville Open. Spates said many of wrestlers who competed in the opener will not wrestle, but many of the team's newcomers will see action in Saturday's tournament.
