HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - SIUE wrestling finished ninth as a team Friday at the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands, placing five individuals in the top eight of their respective weight classes.
"It was a little disappointing today after having such a good end of the day yesterday," said SIUE Head Coach
Jeremy Spates. "Still, we put ourselves in good position to have that many placewinners and be in the top 10."
As a team, SIUE placed ninth with 64.5 points. Northwestern won the tournament with 122 points followed by Penn (115), Pittsburgh (115), Wisconsin (114.5), Illinois (104.5), Arizona State (86.0), Rutgers (85.0), Princeton (65.0) and SIUE.
Caleb Tyus was SIUE's top individual with a fourth-place finish at 141 pounds.
Saul Ervin (141) and
Colton McKiernan (285) both took fifth.
Cardi Wilson (165) and
Ryan Yarnell (197) placed eighth.
"All of them did a good job," said Spates. "Obvioously, there were three in the semis and it didn't turn out the way they wanted. But have three guys in there and scoring bonus points was a plus. Overall it was a good tournament," added Spates.
Next up for the Cougars is the return to dual meets. SIUE plays host to Mid-American Conference rival Buffalo Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. Tickets for the match are available at SIUECougars.com.
