EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Caleb Tyus and Colton McKiernan became the first two Cougar Clash champions for SIUE as the duo took home individual titles at 149 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively.

"We hadn't had a champion at the Cougar Clash so that was good," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "Having two makes it even better. Toward the end of the tournament we wrestled better. There were some matches early on that we didn't wrestled very smart."

Tyus won the 149-pound title match with a 2-1 decision over Missouri's Joel Mylin. All four of Tyus' matches were decided by three points or less.

McKiernan had a fall early and then won three consecutive close matches for his title. He defeated Northern Illinois' Jacobi Jackson in the finals 2-0.

SIUE fans had three SIUE finalists with Cardi Wilson advancing to the finals before being bested by Northern Illinois' Izzak Olejnik 5-0.

"Cardi has been wrestling well as well. He has wrestled and beat some good kids in our opening duals."

Other top finishers for the Cougars were Austin Macias (125/6th), Davian Guanajuato (125/5th), Aaron Schulist (133/3rd), Marcel Lopez (133/7th), Caine Tyus (14/14th), Saul Ervin (149/7th), Grant LaDuke (157/6th), Hayden Shepherd (165/5th), Chase Diehl (174/5th), Sergio Villalobos (184/5th), Micah Ervin (184/8th), Ryan Yarnell (197/3rd) and Dan McKiernan (8th/285)

Spates said the Cougars have been a bit inconsistent but growing.

"We have a lot of things to clean up but I think we're progressing right now."

The next event for the Cougars is a quad dual Dec. 16 in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, where SIUE challenges Chattanooga, Gardner-Webb and Clarion.
