WATERLOO, Iowa - The historic start for SIUE tennis continued on Sunday afternoon, as the Cougars notched a 6-1 win over the UNI Panthers to close out the Red & White's two-match road swing to the Hawkeye State.
The Cougars again started the match by securing the doubles point, as
Melissa Vizcardo and
Caitlyn Sporing earned a 6-4 win on the No. 3 court. The point was earned soon after when
Jordan Schifano and
Vanessa Reinicke notched a 6-2 win on the No. 2 court. The No. 1 doubles bout, featuring the team of
Jill Lambrechts and
Maria Thibault, went unfinished.
With the 1-0 advantage in hand, the squads took to the court for singles play. The Red & White doubled its lead thanks to Lambrechts, who notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory on the No. 2 court, followed by 6-4, 6-4 win for
Fabiola Perez in the No. 4 position. Lambrechts improves to 7-1 in singles match play and 12-2 overall, while Perez remains a perfect 7-0 in singles match play this season. The match victory was clinched moments later, as Reinicke notched a 7-5, 6-3 win on the No. 3 court to improve to 7-0 in singles match play. The Cougars' lone blemish on the day followed, as Schifano dropped a three-set affair in the No. 1 spot. The match closed out with a 6-2, 6-4 win on the No. 6 court beforeÂ
Amber Hochstatter claimed a 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) win in the No. 5 position.
"It was great to see all nine of our players step in and contribute today," said SIUE Head Coach
Adam Albertsen following the match. "Northern Iowa gave us a strong test and really made us work. It was a great win to move to 8-0 on the season, but we look forward to getting back to practice and cleaning up some areas in our singles play."
The Cougars, which improve to 8-0 on the season, will return to the Edwardsville Y Meyer Center for a fixture against in-state foe Bradley. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, February 25. Admission is free for all spectators.
