ATHENS, Ohio - SIUE wrestling will send seven wrestlers back to the mat Saturday at the 2022 MAC Championships at the Ohio University Convocation Center.

Austin Macias, Aaron Schulist, Saul Ervin, Caleb Tyus, Sergio Villalobos, Ryan Yarnell and Colton McKiernan each will be consolation bracket in their respective weight classes working toward as much as a third-place finish. All will finish in the top eight.

SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates said it was an up and down day.

"We had a couple of good wins in the opening round," said Spates. However, the second round gave the Cougars issue.

"Guys really responded in coming back. We had bonus points in three matches," he said.

Tyus, a freshman competing in his first MAC Championship, eliminated the No. 2 seed from the tournament to finish the day. He defeated Clarion's Brent Moore 10-4.

Macias also picked up a pair of 8-1 wins over Rider's Tyler Klinsky abd Bloomsburg's Bronson Garber. He had one win for the season heading into the MAC Championships.

"He has competed at a high level," said Spates. "He just hasn't been able to put it together. He was able to figure of the mentality he needed."

Schulist, competing only for the second time this season, also advanced. He bested Kent State's Brendon Fenton in an 18-2 technical fall.

Saturday's action starts at 10:30 a.m. with the consolation quarterfinals followed by the consolation semifinals at noon. The championship finals are set to start at 2 p.m. If necessary, NCAA Qualifying Spot Matches will follow.
