Cougars Fall Short against Skyhawks

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE clawed its way back from a 4-0 deficit, but fell short Friday, falling to UT Martin 5-3 in the opener of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Simmons Baseball Complex.

SIUE has dropped seven straight games and fell to 10-13 overall and 0-4 in the OVC with the loss. UT Martin improved to 8-15 and 1-3.

UT Martin opened the scoring with three runs on four hits against SIUE starter Brant Glidewell (2-2) in the third. The Skyhawks added a run in the fifth inning to lead 4-0.

Glidewell settled in and worked seven innings, allowing four UT Martin runs on nine hits. He struck out a career-best eight hitters.

"Brant did a nice job," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "It took a lot of pitches to get through. He had a few deep counts, and they found a way to put the rally together to score three. He gave us seven innings and he limited our opponent to a point where we felt like we could be in the ballgame. We just weren't able to get much going offensively."

UT Martin pitchers Rhett Fetner and Seth Petry (1-5) held the Cougars without a hit through the first 6 2/3 innings. Fetner started the game but left with an apparent arm injury in the third inning. Petry worked four innings in relief.

Richie Well hit his seventh home run of the season with two outs in the seventh to end the no-hit bid and the shutout. Avery Owusu-Asiedu followed with a double to left-center and Brennan Orf followed with an RBI single to centerfield to cut the lead to 4-2.

UT Martin scratched across an insurance run in the ninth against reliever Kyle Dixon thanks to a hit an a walk.

Owusu-Asiedu hit his seventh home run of the year in the bottom of the inning for the 5-3 final.

"We finally got some barrels there late and it just wasn't enough," Lyons said. "I think Richie (Well) hit three balls on the screws. Avery hit several balls hard as well and Brett Pierson was on base every time up tonight."

Owusu-Asiedu finished 2-4. Well, Orf and Pierson each finished with one hit.

Will Smith and Jack Culumovic each had three hits and two RBIs for the Skyhawks.

The two teams play the second game of the series Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

"We have to come out ready to play tomorrow," Lyons added. "We're going to need a good effort throughout the rest of the weekend."
