EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE wrestling picked up a pair of wins Sunday, including its first Mid-American Conference dual of the season, with a 20-15 victory over Cal Baptist and a 23-20 triumph over Kent State.

SIUE improved to 2-2 for the season and next heads to the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30).

"It was nice to get a win over a Big 12 team (Cal Baptist) and then a win over Kent State in conference," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "The guys wrestled well. We had a tough start to the schedule so we wanted to see a little bit more offense and more finishing to our shots."

Caleb Tyus, Brock Woodcock and Dominic Lopez all were double winners for the day.

"We got some bonus points as well with Danny Martinez in the first match," added Spates.

The Cougars used three straight wins from Martinez, Tyus and Woodcock midway through the match against Cal Baptist. An overtime victory by Lopez as well as a forfeit accepted by Bryson Buhk at heavyweight sealed the dual.

"We were doing a better job of getting to our ties. Our shape was a little bit better," said Spates.

SIUE got off to a strong start against Kent State. Davian Guanajuato bested Kent State's Adan Benavidez 7-1 at 125 pounds. Marcel Lopez added a 4-1 win at 133 pounds over Matt Ellis.

Tyus and Woodcock then collected back-to-back technical falls at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Tyus stymied Kaden Setzer 16-1, and Woodcock overpowered Keegan Knapp 17-1. Wins by Dominic Lopez and a one-point win (4-3 by Deron Pulliam at 184 pounds provided the team victory.

"We have to clean up some things to get better, but I think this was a good step forward," said Spates.
