KANSAS CITY, Mo. – SIUE men's soccer is well represented on this year's North All-Region teams as announced by the United Soccer Coaches Tuesday. SIUE has a First Team selection for the first time since 2016.
Senior defender Will Harris (Coventry, England) was placed on the First Team while senior midfielder Sam Layton (Brisbane, Australia) and junior midfielder/forward Stephan Moreira (Colchester, England) joined on the Second Team. Senior goalkeeper Sam Gomez (St. Louis) was a Third Team pick.
Harris was named Defender of the Year in the Ohio Valley Conference after starting all 20 games on SIUE's back line. Harris added a goal and three assists for SIUE.
Layton, a mainstay in SIUE's midfield appeared in 19 games, starting 17 for the Cougars. He scored a goal, while adding six assists, which was second most on the team and good for sixth in the OVC. He was a Second Team All-OVC selection.
Moreira, the Forward of the Year in the OVC, was second on the team and seventh in the OVC with 19 points. He scored five goals and led the team with seven assists. He appeared in all 20 games, making 18 starts for SIUE.
Gomez earned Goalkeeper of the Year honors in the OVC after leading the league in goals against average, save percentage and shutouts. His goals against average (0.61) and save percentage (.844) both rank sixth in the NCAA. His 10 shutouts are tied for fourth.
The four All-Region selections are the most for SIUE since the return to Division I competition in 2008.
SIUE finished its season at 16-1-3, marking the most wins since the return to Division I. The Cougars were won the OVC Regular Season and Tournament titles, before making their 24th NCAA Tournament appearance.
