EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE wrestling grabbed a pair of dual match victories at First Community Arena Sunday, dispatching Mid-American Conference rival Ohio 21-15 and Little Rock 22-14.
"Both of these teams are good teams," said SIUE Head Coach
Jeremy Spates. "We have been wrestling well throughout the year. To come out here and win and win convincingly in both duals was awesome."
Aaron Schulist picked up a big win early against Ohio with a 1 minute, 54 second pin over Nolan Frye.
"It was a really good day for myself and the team," said Schulist. "We really came out and scrapped today. I was really proud of the guys."
Schulist also would have a major decision win against Little Rock, defeating Joshua Sarpy 14-6. Schulist was down early in the match but came back for the much-needed bonus point.
"I have a goal every time in my matches to score points and sometime that results in giving my coaches heart attacks," admitted Schulist.
The Ohio match went down to the final match. Each team would win five matches with other wins from
Saul Ervin,
Caleb Tyus and
Ryan Yarnell, but it was
Colton McKiernan's 2:12 fall over Jacob Padilla that provided the deciding margin.
SIUE's momentum carried into the second match of the day against Little Rock.
After Schulist's major decision, Ervin made a stunning comeback with two takedowns in the third period to tie the match 6-6 heading into overtime. He then needed just 25 seconds for another takedown and a pin at the edge of the mat against Little Rock's Brennan Van Hoecke.
"That's great to see because in the past when we would get down in the past we would put our heads down.
SIUE also would pick up wins from
Caleb Tyus,
Sergio Villalobos, Yarnell and McKiernan. Little Rock did not score in the final two matches against Yarnell and McKiernan.
The Cougars, now 6-7 overall in dual matches and 2-6 in MAC duals, close out the regular season next weekend at home against Northern Illinois.
