SIUE Women's Tennis Edges St. Thomas 4-3

WATERLOO, Iowa - SIUE women's tennis and St. Thomas went down to a winner-take-all match, and the Cougars were successful with a 4-3 triumph at the Black Hawk Tennis Center.

Caitlyn Sporing, playing No. 6 singles, bested St. Thomas' Monterey Knewtson 6-4, 7-5 for the clinching team point.

"This was an awesome college tennis match," said SIUE Head Coach Adam Albertsen. "We often talk about valuing the doubles point, and it came up big today giving us the edge."

SIUE, now 5-1 and winners of four straight matches, won all three doubles matches to secure the early doubles point. Jill Lambrechts and Jordan Schifano at No. 1 doubles as well as Melissa Vizcardo and Sporing at No. 3 doubles finished their respective matches at nearly the same time. Amelia Gorman and Margaux Guibal Britt made it a clean sweep in doubles with the win at No. 2.

The Cougars jumped out to a strong lead in single with strong wins from Schifano at No. 3 singles and Gorman at No. 4 singles. St. Thomas managed to tie the score with three straights singles wins before Sporing clinched it for SIUE.

"Jordan and Amelia picked up two quick wins to really set the tone," said Albertsen. "Things got tight when it was 3-3, but our senior Caitlyn stepped up and finished off the clutch win. St. Thomas battled like crazy and really was impressive today."

SIUE next takes on Northern Iowa in a 10 a.m. match Sunday,
