MIAMISBURG, Ohio - SIUE women's tennis won its sixth straight match Saturday, downing Dayton 6-1 at the South Regency Tennis Center.
"This was big-time quality road win for the team," said SIUE Head Coach
Adam Albertsen. "We were able to grind out the doubles point and take the lead without playing as sharp as we have been in the past."
The Cougars took the doubles point early with 6-3 wins by
Jill Lambrechts and
Jordan Schifano at No. 1 doubles and
Jaiden McKee and
Caitlyn Sporing at No. 3 doubles.
The SIUE lead quickly went to 3-0 when
Fabiola Perez bested Jordan Mitchell 6-2, 6-3 and
Jaiden McKee defeated Erica Wojcikiewicz 6-1, 6-2.
Jordan Schifano, like SIUE as a team, is 7-1 in dual matches this spring. She bested Elizabeth Hamilton at No. 3 singles 7-6, 6-3.
Amelia Gorman came front a set down to defeat Laura Greb 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
Jill Lambrechts also collected a win at No. 1 singles 7-6, 6-3 over Natalie Osiecki.
Lamrechts' win clinched the victory for the Cougars.
"Singles had some high-level battles that we just continued to compete no matter what the score was," said Albertsen. "The score was 6-1, but this was much closer than the score shows and Dayton really made us earn each team point."
Dayton dropped to 6-3 for the season.
"We are starting to come together as a team and look to keep getting healthier and stronger," said Albertsen. "Next up is Saint Louis and we know that will be another strong test."
SIUE meets Saint Louis Thursday with a 12 p.m. start time scheduled.
