TULSA, Okla. - All three SIUE wrestlers have advanced to compete on day two of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
"Overall it was a good day," said SIUE Head Coach
Jeremy Spates. "Overall we need to tighten up a few things that cost us in those losses today. If we pull off a few wins, we'll put ourselves chances to be on the podium."
SIUE heavyweight
Colton McKiernan won his first match over Lehigh's Nathan Taylor 4-0. McKiernan dropped his next match to Arizona's State's No. 5-ranked Cohlton Schultz, who also accounted for the last time McKiernan lost a match back on Dec. 30th. McKiernan, who had a 12-match winning streak, next faces Penn's Ben Goldin in the consolation bracket.
Saul Ervin dropped a 3-2 nailbiter in round one of the championships to North Carolina State's Ryan Jack. He rebounded for a 5-2 win over Oregon State's Cleveland Belton to advance in the consolation bracket. Ervin next will wrestle South Dakota State's Clay Carlson.
Caleb Tyus had a similar path when Iowa's Max Murin recorded a 6-3 win in the opening round. Tyus came back for a decisive 8-1 victory over Edinboro's Ryan Burgos. His next opponent is Michael Blockhaus of Minnesota.
"I think this is the first time we have had three wrestlers advance to the second day," added Spates.
