Cougars Drop Shortened Series to UT Martin

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - With chilly temperatures canceling Saturday's opening game of an Ohio Valley Conference three-game series, SIUE dropped a pair of contests Sunday to UT Martin.

SIUE, now 10-16 overall and 0-5 in the OVC, fell 6-5 in the opener and 8-2 in the nightcap.

The Cougars corralled the lead in game one but fell to a late three-run rally in the seventh against UT Martin, which improved to 9-11 overall and 2-3 in the OVC.

Kaitlyn Kelley starred for the Skyhawks with three hits and four RBIs.

SIUE's offense was limited to six hits in Sunday's opener. Emma Neuman, who now has a team-leading five-game hitting streak, rapped a two-RBI double in the third inning and added an RBI single in the seventh.

"Emma had a good week at the plate," said SIUE Head Coach Ben Sorden. "Along with three hits today, she had both of the game-winning hits earlier this week."

Rylie Pindel took the loss in game one in relief of Kelsey Ray.

In game two, UT Martin outhit the Cougars 12-5 and never looked back after scoring two runs in the second and third innings.

Lauren Yslava's RBI double to the gap in right center during the fourth inning was the offensive highlight for the Cougars. Neuman would score on a wild pitch in the sixth.

Sydney Baalman threw five innings for the Cougars, striking out six. After the loss, her record dropped to 5-5.

"We need to make a few adjustments and just get better," said Sorden. "We have a midweek doubleheader with Western Illinois Wednesday before we travel this weekend to meet Eastern Illinois for an OVC series."
