KANSAS CITY, Mo. -
Kelsey Ray and Syndey Baalman each threw a complete-game shuttout Thursday as SIUE softball blanked Kansas City twice at Urban Youth Academy.
SIUE, 12-19, defeated Kansas City 3-0 in the opener and 2-0 in the nightcap.
Ray began the day with a shutout in which she struck out six and did not walk a batter. Baalman backed her up with a four-hit shutout in which she fanned three.
"Great job by
Kelsey Ray," said SIUE Head Coach
Ben Sorden. "I thought she attacked well and she was in control all day long. Sydney also threw well today and got some key strikeouts."
In game one, the Cougars scored all they needed in the first inning.
Lexi King walked and later scored on a single by
Hayley Palm. Kansas City would commit back-to-back infield errors that would allow Palm and
Sherri Mason to give the Cougars the early 3-0 lead.
"Hayley just had a solid week at the plate," said Sorden. "I'm so happy for her."
Ray scattered eight Kansas City hits, enough so that Katie Noble led the Roos with three hits.
In the nightcap, SIUE was held scoreless for the first five innings before breaking through in the sixth.
Emma Neuman would score the eventual game-winning run off a fielder's choice RBI by Lauren Yslava.
The Cougars added one more with two outs in the top of the seventh as
Paige Rocha singled home
Micah Arps.
SIUE is idle in the Ohio Valley Conference this weekend and next faces a rescheduled doubleheader Tuesday at Western Illinois.
