Regular Season Closes With Sweep for SIUE Women's Tennis

FULTON, Mo. - SIUE women's tennis will bounce into Ohio Valley Conference Tournament play next week with a four-match winning streak after defeating William Woods 7-0 in a nonconference matchup Friday at Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex.

"This was one of our cleaner matches of the year," said SIUE Head Coach Adam Albertsen. "William Woods is a team filled with experience, and I like how we continue to build momentum going into the OVC tournament."

SIUE has clinched the No. 2 seed for the OVC Tournament, which is set for April 21-23 in Paducah, Kentucky. The Cougars' opening match will be in the semifinals April 22nd at 2 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. The full brackets will be released after OVC regular season play finishes Saturday.

The Cougars excelled in a road tune-up against William Woods, which is ranked No. 23 nationally in the NAIA. SIUE won all of its matches in straight sets. Jill Lambrechts, Margaux Guibal Britt, Jordan Schifano, Amelia Gorman, Caitlyn Sporing and Melissa Vizcardo picked up singles wins.

SIUE earned doubles victories from Lambrechts and Schifano, Gorman and Guibal Britt as well as Caitlyn Sporing and Fabiola Perez.

"It's great to see our seniors Caitlyn Sporing and Melissa Vizcardo finish the regular season with strong wins," said Albertsen. "I am proud of this entire team. They continue to fight and push forward, no matter what is thrown their way. I am excited to take this team into postseason and keep it rolling."
