EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -
Melissa Vizcardo and
Caitlyn Sporing were honored Saturday for Senior Day as SIUE women's tennis bested Southern Indiana 7-0 at the SIUE Tennis Courts.
"It was an awesome Senior Day with a tremendous crowd so thanks to everybody who came out and celebrated Melissa and Caitlyn," said SIUE Head Coach
Adam Albertsen.
The Cougar coach said Vizcardo and Sporing were among the people who believed SIUE, now 14-4 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference, could return to a high level of play when Albertsen first took the helm as the head coach.
"For them to come in and buy into this program was really special," said Albertsen. "They've given so much on the courts, in the classroom and around the community. Their energy alone has done so much for this program beyond the wins and losses on the court. We're so thankful for them and everything they have done for our program."
After Senior Day celebrations, SIUE went right to work with the Cougars swiftly dispatching Southern Indiana in the doubles.
Jill Lambrechts and
Jordan Schifano defeated Lauren Rowe and Madison Windham 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Margaux Guibal Britt and
Amelia Gorman downed Abby Myers and Rachel McCorkle 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Jaiden McKee and Sporing bested Abby Brown and Khandice Thomas 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
"I really like how we played outdoors today," said Albertsen. "The team looked more focused. We looked pretty sharp and played smart. That's what we have been asking with consistency and being smart. We saw that at a lot of different points in our lineup."
SIUE won all six of its singles matches in straight sets led by Schifano's 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles over Thomas. The Cougars also picked up wins from Lambrechts at No. 1 singles, Guibal Britt at No. 2 singles, Gorman at No. 4 singles, McKee at No. 5 singles and Sporing at No. 6 singles.
The Cougars have one more OVC match left on the schedule at Eastern Illinois. SIUE faces the Panthers next Saturday in Charleston. SIUE will close out the regular season April 14th at William Woods in preparation for the OVC Tournament set for April 21-23 in Paducah, Kentucky.
