LITTLE ROCK – Brennan Orf and Avery Owusu-Asiedu combined for six hits, including three home runs, but it came in a losing cause. Little Rock picked up a series win with a 10-5 win over SIUE Saturday in the second game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series at Gary Hogan Field.
The Cougars slipped to 5-6 in OVC play and are 22-16 overall. Little Rock is 22-14 and 9-5 in the OVC.
"Uncharacteristic of our team, we made some errors," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "And we gave up too many free bases with hit batters and walks. It cost us."
Orf got the scoring started with a solo home run in the first before Little Rock plated three runs in the second and two more in the third to go up 5-1 against SIUE starter Jake Bockenstedt (4-3).
In the fifth, Owusu-Asiedu connected on his seventh home run of the year following a walk to Orf and a single by Josh Ohl to cut the lead to 5-4. Orf hit his second home run of day to tie the score at 5 apiece. Orf now has a career-best 14 home runs to lead the Cougars. He is second in the OVC.
The Trojans scored twice in the seventh to lead 7-5 and chase Bockenstedt, who hit three batters in the inning. He worked 6 2/3 innings allowing seven runs on seven hits. He walked four, hit three batters and struck out four.
"Bockenstedt grinded his way into the seventh inning, but eventually things kind of caught up with him," Lyons said.
Little Rock added three runs in the eighth against reliever Zeus Ponder.
"The guys did a nice job fighting back in the end we just came up short," Lyons said.
Orf finished the day 4-4 with the two home runs and three runs scored. Owusu-Asiedu was 2-4 with the three RBIs and a run scored.
"We put some good swings on the ball. All of our runs came from the home runs and we'd like to see some more big hits with guys on base. "(Brennan) Orf and Avery (Owusu-Asiedu) swung the bat really well and it showed with their production."
The Cougars and Trojans will play the series finale Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
"We have to find a way to salvage a game in the series and get back to .500 in the league," Lyons added.
