Southeast Missouri Outlasts Cougars

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri used a late-game run to defeat SIUE men's basketball 52-47 Saturday afternoon at the Show Me Center.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for SIUE, which fell to 11-9 overall and 4-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference. SEMO improved to 7-12 overall and 2-4 in the OVC.

"We only had three assists and made 14 turnovers, that's out of character for us," SIUE Head Coach Brian Barone said. "We didn't move the ball well enough, they did a good job pressuring us and we didn't get the stops we needed to down the stretch."

Damarco Minor capped off an 8-2 run to sink a three just before the halftime buzzer and the Cougars took a 28-24 lead into the break. The Cougars extended the lead to as many as eight after halftime, but never pulled away any farther.

Rob Martin's drive and layup with 2:33 left gave the Redhawks their first lead of the second half, and they never trailed again.

Shamar Wright pulled the Cougars back with one (46-45) after an offensive rebound and putback with 1:19 to play. Four consecutive free throws from Braxton Stacker pushed the SEMO advantage back to five with less than 10 seconds to play. Damarco Minor drove the length of the court and converted a layup to cut the game back to three before Adam Larson's two free throws sealed the Cougars' fate.

"It comes down to one or two possessions," Barone said. "Ultimately, we had the opportunity to extend the lead, but we didn't. We need everyone, starting with me, to do better down the stretch to make sure we do what we need to do to come out with a win."

Minor led the Cougars with 21 points. Shamar Wright added 15 points for the Cougars, who shot just 32 percent (17-54) from the field and were 9-15 (60 percent) at the free throw line.

"We knew we were coming in here into a nasty game," Barone said.

Southeast Missouri shot 35 percent (20-57) overall and 10-13 (77 percent) at the free throw line.

Josh Earley scored 16 points to lead the Redhawks.

SIUE has a week before facing Tennessee Tech at home Jan. 27.

"We have a good Tennessee Tech team coming in," Barone said. "We responded last time after some extended time off and did a good job, and I know we will again. We have a good group of guys. The guys are frustrated right now. We'll let them feel how it feels and then we'll move on, and we go get the next one."
