Cougars Push Past Valparaiso 4-1

Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's tennis won its second straight match to start the spring season, upending Valparaiso 4-1 at the Edwardsville Y Meyer Center.

The Cougars won the doubles point early, which helped provide some much-needed momentum heading into singles play.

SIUE's Amelia Gorman and Stefaniya Anikina bested Mia Bertino and Sydney Stone 6-2. The Cougars locked up the doubles point behind a 6-2 win by SIUE's Margauz Guibal Britt and Cydney Rogers at No. 3 doubles, defeating Elizabeth Sobieski and Jolene Fernandes.

"Grabbing that doubles point was important," said SIUE Head Coach Adam Albertsen,

SIUE's Jordan Schifano wasted little time in her No. 3 singles match, overpowering Stone 6-1, 6-0. Anikina made the team score 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Sobieski,

"We played smart tennis in our singles matches," said Albertsen. "I was impressed with our consistency and direction."

Amelia Gorman recorded the clinching point at No. 4 singles for the Cougars with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Bertino.

The Cougars will aim to make it three straight wins to start the season Feb. 10 when they welcome Bradley for a nonconference dual.
