EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer made it three wins from three Ohio Valley Conference games thanks to a 2-0 win in front of a Homecoming crowd of 2,924 at Korte Stadium.
The Cougars have won three straight and improved to 5-3-2 overall. The Cougars are now 14-2 in Homecoming games since returning to Division I in 2008.
SIUE also has not allowed a goal in OVC play, outscoring its first three opponents 7-0.
For the third time in as many games, SIUE scored early. Jacobo Sanfeliu provided the opener for the Cougars in the seventh minute. Sanfeliu scored from close range after taking a cross from Nic Muench from the right side of the box.
Nacho Abeal made it 2-0 in the 68th minute. Abeal jumped and one-timed a ball from Stephan Moreira past USI goalkeeper Andrew Klott from seven yards out.
SIUE put up 22 total shots and plastered the USI goal with a season-high 14 shots on target. Klott made a career-high 12 saves for the Screaming Eagles.
USI played with just 10 men for most of the second half after forward Jackson Mitchell was shown a red card for a hard challenge against SIUE goalkeeper Rob Gjelaj. The Screaming Eagles took seven total shots and managed two on goal. Gjelaj made two saves en route to his third consecutive clean sheet in goal.
The game was the last of a five-game home stand for SIUE. The Cougars were 4-1 on the home stand, allowing just a single goal while scoring nine. SIUE next travels to Lindenwood for an OVC contest with the Lions Thursday at 7 p.m.
