KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Playing on a snow-covered field and without Ohio Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Year Rob Gjelaj, who was injured in warmups, SIUE dropped a 5-1 decision at Western Michigan, ending its season in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Cougars finished their season at 12-5-3. Western Michigan improved to 12-2-6 and will play at No. 1 overall seed Ohio State Sunday in the second round.
SIUE's lone goal came from Pavel Dashin, who converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute after he was taken down by WMU goalkeeper Colin Welsh on a hard challenge.
The home side grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third minute. When SIUE tried to head a ball away in the box, it settled to Owen Smith who hit a side volley towards the far post. SIUE goalkeeper Ethan Kornas got his right had to it, but it glanced off the post and in for the early advantage.
WMU doubled its lead in the 38th minute, following a free kick. Two attempts hit the post, and the second deflection came out to Christian Shannon, who one-timed a shot into the far corner for the 2-0 Bronco lead.
The Broncos' third goal came in the 50th minute when Greyson Mercer got his head to a short cross. Mercer scored again in the 62nd minute with a shot from outside of the box. Kornas got his hands to shot but couldn't keep it from the back of the net, making it 4-0.
Duarte Chapelas made it 5-1 WMU in the 82nd minute.
Western Michigan outshot the Cougars 19-17. The Broncos put 12 shots on goal. Kornas, who was making his first career start, made a career-high seven saves in the loss.
Jacobo Sanfeliu paced the Cougars with three shots, including two on goal. Nic Muench also had three shots. He had one on target.
The NCAA tournament appearance, the 25th in school history, followed OVC regular season and tournament championships by SIUE. It is the first time the Cougars have made consecutive tournament appearance since returning to Division I play.
SIUE has won both the regular season and tournament titles in each of the first two years that the OVC has had men's soccer.
