EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -
Jordan Schifano came back from a set down Saturday to give SIUE women's tennis the clinching point in a 4-3 triumph over Missouri State at the SIUE Tennis Courts.
"Jordan stepped up in such a big moment to get a massive win for herself and the team," said SIUE Head Coach
Adam Albertsen. "She is an incredible player. For four years has shown amazing steadiness and rolled in a great match. I could not be prouder of her and this entire team."
Schifano defeated Elif Gunal 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
"It was a great fight by our team against a very strong Missouri State team," said Albertsen.
SIUE began the match with a key win in doubles.
Amelia Gorman and
Stefaniya Anikina grabbed a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, and the Cougars clinched the doubles point behind Schifano and
Jill Lambrechts with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.
"The doubles point was big for our team," said Albertsen. "After that, seeing Amelia and Stefaniya fight for straight set wins kept the momentum going."
SIUE improved to 7-1 as a team with the victory. Missouri State dropped to 7-4.
"It is always an adjustment moving outside for the first time, and our team handled it pretty well," said Albertsen.
The Cougars hope to remain outdoors with their next three road matches in Louisiana. SIUE heads south for spring trip matches at Alcorn State, Nicholls State and New Orleans.
