EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Lindenwood scored six times in the third inning Saturday and outlasted SIUE 14-6 in the second game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series at Roy E. Lee Field.
Both teams are now 1-1 in OVC play. SIUE is 6-17 overall and Lindenwood is 6-16.
Lindenwood went up 4-0 in the second inning thanks in part to two unearned runs. The Cougars got RBIs from John Stallcup and Zack Floyd in the bottom of the inning to cut into the lead before the Lions six-run third, which included three unearned runs thanks to a pair of SIUE errors.
"The first three innings were sloppy, really on both sides," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "The six-run inning was too much to overcome. A couple of defensive miscues in the inning extended it and allowed it to become too big."
Ryan Niedzwiedz and Gage Franck collected RBIs in the third inning to cut the lead back to 10-4.
After another two runs from Lindenwood in the top of the fourth, Daniel Gierer led off the bottom half with his second home run of the year and the Cougars added another run on an error to make it 12-6.
The Lions scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the 14-6 final.
Jacob Kampf (0-3) started and worked 2.2 innings. He allowed seven runs, five earned, on four hits. Ian Benner followed Kampf and pitched 4.1 innings of relief. He allowed six runs, three of which were earned.
"To be able to stretch out the game is what he did," Lyons said of Benner. "His first inning he gave up some runs, but then he settled in and was able to extend the game for us."
Matthew Gist allowed a run in two-thirds of an inning, before Joseph Martin retired all four batters he faced to finish the game. He struck out three.
Ethan Willoughbu was 3-5 to lead the Cougars offensively. Lucas Spence and Chase Bloomer each had two hits.
Gage Franck was on base four times, without a hit. He added an RBI on a sacrifice fly and stole three bases.
The Cougars swiped eight bases in the game, marking the ever in a single game.
Preston Salazar (2-1) tossed five innings in relief for Lindenwood, allowing just a single unearned run. He struck out five in the victory.
Lindenwood leadoff hitter Colin Shea was 3-5 with four RBIs.
The rubber game of the three-game series is Sunday at Simmons Baseball Complex. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
"You look at a lot of series and you're looking at 1-1 after Saturday," Lyons added. "It's a battle of who wants it the most on Sunday. Now here you are, you sit 1-1 in a conference weekend, and you have to come out ready to play."
