SIUE Softball Gains Split at UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. - SIUE and UT Martin will decide the weekend series Sunday after splitting a doubleheader Saturday at Bettye Giles Field.

UT Martin, 15-13 overall and 3-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference, won game one 4-3. SIUE, now 10-19 overall and 2-6 in the OVC, grabbed the nightcap 6-2. Game time Sunday is 1 p.m.

Rylie Pindel won game two for the Cougars with five innings of relief. She fanned four batters and yielded just three hits.

"Pindel came in and absolutely closed the door on them," said SIUE Head Coach Ben Sorden.

SIUE scored two runs in the second, third and sixth innings.

"We hit a number of balls hard today right at people," said Sorden. "I was happy with the way we were swinging it. We were making things happen offensively."

After UT Martin opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by starting/losing pitcher Katie Drieling, SIUE took charge in the second on RBI singles by Lauren Yslava and Paige Rocha.

Rocha recorded a hit in both games and now holds a 22-game hitting streak,

Grace Lueke, playing third base for the Cougars, smacked a home run in the third inning. Her two-run shot was her third home run of the season and brought home Harley Limberger who had reached on an fielding error.

"It was hit over the scoreboard in left field," said Sorden.

SIUE added insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI double from Jenna Herron and an RBI single by Anna Henderson.

In game one, the game down to momentum shift. SIUE and UT Martin were tied 2-2 heading to the seventh. Rocha planted a solo home run over the fence only to have the Skyhawks' Kaci Fuller hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Kiersten Nixon collected the win in the circle for UT Martin while Sydney Baalman garnered the loss.

"Sydney threw a good game in the opener," Sorden said.
