PADUCAH, Ky. – SIUE golf defeated Morehead State 4-0-2 Tuesday to win the third annual Carpenter/Chaney Classic match play event at the Country Club of Paducah.
"We played well all week," SIUE Head Coach Derrick Brown said. "It's not easy to win three matches on a good, hard golf course."
The Cougars advanced to Tuesday's final after defeating Eastern Illinois in the quarterfinal round 5-1-0 and Lindenwood in the semifinal round 3-2-1.
"Going 12-3-3 for the tournament says something about the overall depth of our lineup," Brown continued.
The event served as trial for the Ohio Valley Conference Championship, in which the top four teams advance out of stroke play to compete in a match play final. SIUE advanced to the Championship round of last year's tournament.
"This is great experience for the guys," Brown said. "Match play is a different game. We have to get to match play (at the OVC tournament), but once we do, this is a positive experience for guys to take in there."
SIUE will play one final regular season tournament, Tennessee State's Big Blue Classic April 8-9.
