EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Tennessee Tech hit four home runs on its way to a 13-6 win over SIUE in the opener of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series Friday at Roy E. Lee Field.
SIUE fell to 10-12 in the OVC and has dropped six straight games. Tennessee Tech improved to 13-9 in the league and is tied for first.
"They beat us with the long ball. Unfortunately, there was traffic on the bases for most of those home runs," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "It just got to be too big of a lead for us to overcome."
Preston Ford hit a two-run shot in the first off SIUE starter Tyler DeLong to put the Golden Eagles up 2-0.
Ethan Willoughby drove home a run for the Cougars in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Mack Mitchell hit a two-run home run in the home half of the second to give SIUE a 3-2 lead.
Theo Bryant crushed a two-out grand slam to left in the third to open up a 6-3 lead for TTU.
DeLong (3-5) pitched into the sixth, allowing eight runs on eight hits. He stuck out four.
SIUE loaded the bases in the fourth and had two more base runners in the fifth but left all five on the bases without scoring.
"We had a couple of opportunities with some runners on base in the middle innings and we left them stranded," Lyons said.
It was 8-3 in the seventh when Bryant led off the inning with his second home run of the night. They added a second run in the inning to lead 10-3 and Eddie Garza's three-run homer in the ninth made it 13-3.
SIUE took advantage of a two-out fielding error in the bottom of the inning to add three unearned runs. Chase Bloomer capped the scoring with a two-run double down the left field line.
Bloomer finished 3-5 with two doubles and the two RBIs.
"Chase is really maturing as a player and is moving towards being a really good college baseball player," Lyons said. "He's been doing a good job for us."
John Stallcup was 2-4. Tennessee Tech outhit SIUE 13-9.
Game two of the series is set for a 2 p.m. first pitch at Simmons Baseball Complex. SIUE will honor its seniors prior to the start.
"We have to regroup and come back ready to go tomorrow," Lyons said.
