Men's Soccer Falls to Dayton

COLUMBUS, Ohio – SIUE men's soccer dropped its final game at Ohio State's Wolstein Classic, dropping a 4-0 decision to Dayton Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars are now 0-2-1. Dayton improved to 3-1-0 with the victory.

The Flyers led 1-0 at half before finding the back of the net three times in the second half.

Dayton missed its first opportunity to go on top. In the 18th minute the Flyers were awarded a penalty, but Geni Kanyane's shot was turned away by SIUE goalkeeper Rob Gjelaj to preserve the scoreless game.

Hjalti Sigurdsson put the Flyers on top with just 1:36 to play before halftime. After a half-volley attempt missed, the ball bounced into the middle of the box, where Sigurdsson redirected in with a low header to put Dayton up 1-0 at halftime.

Joseph Melto Quiah doubled the advantage in the 53rd minute when his left-footed shot from just outside the six-yard box hit the far post and caromed in.

Sigurdsson scored a second in the 64th minute off a corner kick. He had the second of consecutive headers after the initial corner. Less than two minutes later, the Flyers' Ethan Sassine stole a ball at the top of the 18-yard box and was able to push past Gjelaj for the fourth.

Dayton peppered the SIUE defense with 31 total shots including 15 on goal. Gjelaj made a season-high eight saves in 70 minutes in goal for the Cougars. Ethan Kornas played the final 20 minutes making the first two saves of his career.

Nacho Abeal had two of SIUE's nine shots. Patrick Coleman, Pavel Dashin, Nic Muench and Zach Renz each had shots on goals for the Cougars.

Muench and Jacob Bilyeu represented SIUE on the Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team.

SIUE will next face Saint Louis in the Broze Boot match at CITYPARK in St. Louis Sep. 8.
