MEMPHIS, Tenn. – SIUE men's soccer battled Memphis to a 1-1 tie Friday in a steady rain Track and Soccer Complex on the Memphis campus.
The Cougars move to 1-2-2 with the draw. Memphis is now 2-4-1.
Friday's result marks the fourth tie in the series which dates to 1986. Neither team has won a game on the other's home field.
Both goals were scored in the game's first 17 minutes, with SIUE taking the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a strike from Nacho Abeal, his first goal of the year.
Anthony DiFalco answered for Memphis less than five minutes later on an assist from Lucho Galizzi.
The Tigers outshot the Cougars 16-8. The shots on goal were 7-5 to Memphis. Nic Muench led the way with a pair of shots on goal. Yasha Shearer and Archie McDonnell each also had a shot on target.
SIUE goalkeeper Rob Gjelaj, who came into the game as the OVC leader in total saves and saves per game, made six saves in the draw.
The Cougars now return to Korte Stadium for the first time since opening night on Aug. 22. SIUE will play host to former conference mates Bradley in a 7 p.m. game.
