EDWARDSVILLE, Ill- SIUE women's basketball team led much of the way but fell to Southern Indiana 69-65 Thursday at First Community Arena.
SIUE dropped to 3-15 overall and 1-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Southern Indiana improved to 15-5 on the year and 7-2 in the OVC.
The Cougars jumped off to a hot start taking a 13-2 advantage on a
Macy Silvey three-pointer. SIUE ended the first quarter on a 6-2 run.
SIUE took its largest lead of the first half on a
KK Rodriguez layup with 7:44 remaining in the which made it 24-4.
The Screaming Eagles cut the Cougars lead to single digits midway through the third quarter, but SIUE responded with a run of its own and expanded its lead to 17 on an
Ava Gugliuzza three-pointer.
Southern Indiana closed the third quarter on a 12-2 run punctuated by a pair of free throws by Triniti Ralston.
The Screaming Eagles tied the contest 56-56 but SIUE quickly took back the lead on an
Ava Gugliuzza layup.
USI took its first lead of the game, 66-64, with 1:37 left in the game on a pair of free throws by Vannessa Shafford.
SIUE had the opportunity to tie the game at the free-throw line, but
KK Rodriguez missed two out of three free throws with :02 left on the game clock
KK Rodriguez knocked in 14 points to go along with six assists and three rebounds.
Off the bench,
Ava Gugliuzza poured in 14 points, including four three-pointers, and added an assist along with a rebound.
Macy Silvy contributed four three-pointers and finished with 11 points, one assist and five rebounds.
Sophia Loden scored 18 points for the Screaming Eagles on 8-9 from the field to go along with five rebounds.
SIUE shot 25-59 from the field and connected on 12-31 three pointers.
Southern Indiana finished 24-58 (41 percent) from the field and 4-15 (27 percent) from behind the three-point arc.
The Screaming Eagles out rebounded the Cougars 35-33.
SIUE shot 3-5 (60 percent) from the free-throw line. Southern Indiana finished 17-22 (77 percent) from the free-throw line.
SIUE will host Morehead State on Saturday with tip scheduled for 1:00p.m
