VALPARAISO, Ind. - SIUE women's tennis picked up its second straight win Sunday and first road triumph of the spring season, besting Valparaiso 4-1 at The Courts of NWI.
Amelia Gorman, ranked No. 119 nationally among NCAA Division I players in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, provided the match-winning point at No. 1 singles. She defeated Valpo's Moira Silva in a thrilling 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-2 match.
It was a huge win for the Cougars, which started the contest with just two doubles teams and won both of them to earn the double point. Gorman and
Cydney Rogers defeated Silva and Brynn Steven 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Paige Duncan and
Chloe Koons added a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles over Naomi Lalonde and Lacey Tanner.
Needing just three of the singles matches to clinch the match, Valparaiso struck first with a 6-0, 6-2 win by Jolene Fernandez over SIUE's Rogers at No. Â 3 singles.
The Cougars, now 2-0 overall, won the next three singles matches behind Koons at No. 5 singles, a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tanner and a strong comeback at No. 6 singles by SIUE's
Stefaniya Anikina 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Lillian Kelly. It was Anikina's first singles match from a season-ending injury last season.
Anikina's win set up Gorman's come-from-behind victory at No. 1 singles and the Cougar triumph.
SIUE next travels to Western Kentucky for a Jan. 31 matchup in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
